Premiere screenings of “Awaken” starring Darryl Hannah on Friday April 24th, and “Two Down” produced by Stephen Fry (Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, V for Vendetta) on Saturday April 25th will anchor the festival, along with a Friday evening screening of the James Cameron action classic “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” starring Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Hamilton will also be honored with the Artemis Action Icon Award for her pioneering work in the genre.

Sports and Social Change worked with the festival organizers to find sports documentaries that highlight women in action, and we focused on films connected to nonprofit orgs that share in the message of women’s empowerment through sports. Here are just a few of the kick-ass sports documentary films screening at the Artemis Women in Action Film Festival:

We also brought aboard Girls on the Run Los Angeles County as the festival's nonprofit honoree. Girls on the Run is an amazing program committed to making a lasting difference in the lives of girls by teaching them the skills they need to be strong, confident, and healthy women. Over the past 10 years, Girls on the Run LA County has impacted thousands of girls with a proven curriculum of 20 lessons that prepare girls for the challenges ahead, including standing up for themselves, building strong bodies, and supporting healthy relationships. Running is used to inspire and motivate girls, encourage lifelong health, and to build confidence through accomplishment.

Film festival screenings have been grouped into genre-specific “blocks” to highlight complimentary films, shorts and documentaries, such as:
- Olympic Sportswomen (Women’s Judo, Cycling and Ski Jumping) on Fri 4/24

"The Artemis Women In Action Film Festival was established to change the perception of women in film and in society," said festival organizer Sean Newcombe. "Rather than being consigned to roles as long-suffering girlfriends, dutiful wives and loyal assistants, the Artemis Women In Action Film Festival highlights women as fearless fighters, leaders and heroes in their own right."
