July 14, 2012 – Los Angeles, CA - Until today, the previous Guinness world record for most miles run on a treadmill in 12 hours stood at 58:05 miles. Today, Los Angeles resident, Six-time Ironman and ultra runner Lamar Sepulveda set a new world record of 64.35 miles in 12 hours, on a state-of-the-art SK treadmill provided by BH Fitness.

The “Treadmill Challenge” was conceived by Sepulveda as a way to celebrate his 55th birthday and to raise funds and awareness for the Challenged Athletes Foundation, which helps people with physical disabilities pursue an active lifestyle through physical fitness and competitive athletics. Sepulveda, who turned 55 on July 13th, is founder of The “Pay It Forward” Challenge, which uses endurance sports to raise funds and awareness for charities and to inspire others to do so. The entire event was streamed live on the web at SportsandSocialChange.org and all viewers were encouraged to donate to the Challenged Athletes Foundation during the event.

Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) grantees include people born with physical disabilities and people who have become disabled through illness, accident or armed forces or first responder injuries. Many CAF-supported athletes will compete in the Paralympics in London this summer.

Sepulveda is no stranger to long distance challenges, having completed a 611-mile solo state-to-state swim-bike-run from Venice Beach to Phoenix, AZ in 2008, raising $ 15,000 for the Children’s Hospital of Orange County Cancer Institute where his son had been a leukemia patient.  Since 2009, Team “Pay It Forward” Challenge has raised more than $12,000 for the Challenged Athletes Foundation.
